The multiple claims of healthy obesity are little more than mythology according to new research conducted by researchers from the Department of Epidemiology and Public Health at University College London in England. The study also demonstrates that only low percentages of obese and overweight people ever do anything to reduce their weight. The study was reported in the edition of the Journal of the American College of Cardiology.
The researchers followed the weight, diet habits, and overall health of 2,521 men and women between the ages of 39 and 62 for 20 years. The study found that healthy obesity eventually lead to some type of cardiovascular condition that was detrimental or deadly in people that did not exercise or lose weight. Only six percent of the participants lost any weight during the 20 year study.
The researchers claim that healthy obesity is valid only if the healthy obesity is maintained over time. The study shows that the majority of people that are obese cannot maintain healthy obesity over time. The study also shows that the majority of obese people are unwilling or incapable of controlling their food intake or weight.
The British have long accepted that weight is a matter of personal control. In the United States the 35.7 percent of adults that are considered to be obese by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention can be assumed to lack the personal control that the British participants in this study demonstrated. The obese in the United States are prevented from losing weight by Michelle Obama’s failed weight loss program and the huge revenue for drug companies that declaring obesity a disease has generated.
