British couple Dawn Sturgess, 44 and Charlie Rowley, 45, are now in a critical condition following what is believed to be exposure to the same agent which poisoned former spy Sergei Skripal.

Both were left “feeling ill” and “preparing to go to hospital” after touching an item in Queen Elizabeth Gardens.

The park is only 320 metres away from The Guildhall where Charles and Camilla visited.

Scotland Yard’s counter-terror chief Neil Basu said it was too early to confirm whether the incident was linked to the Salisbury attack, saying: “We are not in a position to say whether the nerve agent was from the same batch that the Skripals were exposed to.

“The possibility that these two investigations might be linked is clearly a line of enquiry for us.

“It is important, however, that the investigation is led by the evidence available and the facts alone and we don’t make any assumptions.”

The Duke and Duchess of Cornwall visited Salisbury town centre only a fortnight ago to declare the town “open for business”.

It comes only months after the attack on Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia.

Charles and Camilla hoped to repair the town’s image and tourist industry after the nerve agent attack against the Skripals.

The Royal couple visited shops near the bench where the Skripals were found unconscious.

They also walked past the Zizzi restaurant the father and daughter had dined before the attack.

Mr Rowley and Ms Sturgess are in a critical condition in Salisbury District Hospital.

One of the last places they were seen in public was a family fun day at Amesbury Baptist Centre on Saturday.

The church is one of a number of locations in Amesbury and Salisbury which has been cordoned off by police.

Church secretary Roy Collins said: “We are all quite puzzled and shocked.

“Naturally the connection with Salisbury and recent events there mean there is a heightened public interest.

“We are praying for the couple. One of our members knows them and clearly there are concerns for them and any others in the community.

“They are not church members or regulars.”
