The singer, 71, who was close friends with Harry’s late mother Diana and remained close to the family after her death, was a guest at the May 19 ceremony at Windsor Castle.

He also performed three songs at the afternoon reception hosted by the Queen.

The star said: “It was very, very wonderful to be there.

“To have a black gospel choir, a multiracial bride, a black cellist, who was wonderful, a preacher – it felt like a party, and it felt like progress has been made. Thank God, thank God.

“To be the first multiracial Royal Wedding in Britain – amazing.”

The ‘Candle In The Wind’ singer and his husband David Furnish, attended the conference with the Duke of Sussex to help launch their MenStar Coalition project.

The coalition aims to expand the diagnoses and treatment of HIV infections in men with the goal of ultimately ending the AIDS epidemic by 2030.

The first initiative of the project is a new HIV self-testing campaign for young men in Kenya.

Mr Furnish, chairman of the Elton John AIDS Foundation, told CNN: “What was so inspiring, and it sounds corny, but, true love is what really shone through and that’s what everybody felt, the sincerity and the integrity of that true love on the day.

“And it shows that institutions like the monarchy can evolve with the times.”

Elton John commented on how restrictive life was in the past for members of the Royal family and attributed this progressive event in part to the lead set by the Queen.

He said: “If you go back and watch the crown – in the 50s Princess Margaret wasn’t even allowed to get married because he was divorced! And look how far we’ve come in that respect.

“I think the Queen had a lot to do with it. I think she’s been magnificent.”

At the conference, Prince Harry said: “Inspired by the growing alarm at the rate of new HIV infections among young women, the MenStar coalition is bravely tackling the root cause of this problem – the lack of awareness of HIV prevention amongst hard-to-reach young men.

“And it will be guided by listening to and respecting the voices of te young men the coalition is trying to reach.”

He added: “I am honoured to be sharing the stage with someone who has always put people at the centre of his work, Sir Elton John.”
