Shocking footage shows a group of about 100 teenagers surrounding police before some launch an attack on the officers in a Durham town centre.

A thug can be seen punching an officer in the face, while a group of hooded youths throw bricks and fireworks amid the violent scenes in Stanley.

The body-cam footage was released by police who urged parents to take responsibility of their children following the frightening incident on November 3.

It shows uniformed officers responding to a report of a vulnerable female at the town centre’s bus station before they are quickly surrounded by youths.

Officers can be heard saying “we are asking people nicely to move away” before the situation escalated and they shouted: “Everybody out, move back now.”

Police Sergeant Emma Kay said the worst of the violence was caused by a “hardcore” group of individuals, but many more people stood on the side lines.

She said: “Disorder of this kind is totally unacceptable and violence against our officers will not be tolerated.

“Action will be taken against all the individuals involved that night and Stanley Police will continue to take positive action against anyone involved in this type of behaviour.”

The sergeant asked parents to sign up to a new text service called Be Informed which will alert them to collect their children if there is trouble in the town.
