The Trump administration has no answers to key questions nearly two weeks after an ambush in Niger killed four U.S. soldiers.

The information vacuum has prompted demands in Congress for details, complaints of Pentagon stonewalling and a comparison to Benghazi, the attack in Libya that killed four Americans in 2012.

Among the questions: Why were the Americans apparently caught by surprise? Why was one of them mysteriously left behind when the others’ bodies were evacuated after the shooting stopped? Was the Islamic State responsible?

Sen. John McCain, the Arizona Republican who is chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, says it may take a subpoena to force information out of the Pentagon.

Two other soldiers were wounded in the Niger attack.
