Dec. 22 was a cold morning. So when Milwaukee County Transit System bus driver Irena Ivic saw a baby running across a highway overpass near South 4th and West Mitchell streets, she pulled over her bus immediately.
The girl was barefoot and wearing only a onesie and a diaper. Ivic ran out and picked up the girl, who is not even a year old, and brought her onto the warm bus. A passenger offered the girl a coat, and she fell asleep in Ivic’s arms just as the police and fire department arrived.
Police were able to reunite the girl with her father. Police said the girl had been left outside by her mother, who may have been experiencing a mental health crisis.
This is the ninth missing child that MCTS drivers have reunited with their families in recent years.
Ivic is being honored today by Milwaukee County Executive Chris Abele for her act of kindness with an MCTS Excellence award.
