Today’s ONS figures (see 10.05am) show the number of coronavirus deaths in England and Wales, at 321, has now reached the highest number since the week ending 10 July and, at 3.2%, the highest proportion of deaths registered since 17 July.

The number of excess deaths – those over and above the 5-year-average – stood at 390.

The most up-to-date figures for each of the four nations of the UK puts the number of deaths involving coronavirus from the start of the year has now reached 58,443 across the UK: 50,642 in England, 2,619 in Wales, 4,276 in Scotland and 906 in Northern Ireland.
