A No 10 spokesman said that the Prime Minister had been returned to the ward at St Thomas’ Hospital as his condition continued to improve.

“The Prime Minister has been moved this evening from intensive care back to the ward, where he will receive close monitoring during the early phase of his recovery,” the spokesman said.

“He is in extremely good spirits.”

Donald Trump quickly reacted to the news on Twitter, saying it was “great news” the Prime Minister hadd been moved out of intensive care.

The US President tweeted: “Great News: Prime Minister Boris Johnson has just been moved out of Intensive Care. Get well Boris!!!”

Mr Johnson was admitted to St Thomas’s Hospital in London on Sunday evening a persistent high temperature and cough.#

Downing Street had initially described this as a precautionary measure and he was said to be issuing instructions from his hospital bed.
