The Champions League Round of 16 draw takes place in Nyon, Switzerland on Monday, as one of the world’s most prestigious football tournaments enters its knockout phase.
There was plenty of drama in the group stages, which started one month later than usual, a knock-on effect of the COVID-19 pandemic interrupting the 2019-20 season for three months. Real Madrid, who have won the tournament 13 times, only secured their place in Monday’s draw on the final matchday with a 2-0 victory over Borussia Monchengladbach, while Juventus replaced Barcelona at the top of Group G with a surprise 3-0 win at the Camp Nou.
All four Bundesliga sides made it into the hat for the draw, with Borussia Dortmund, RB Leipzig and reigning champions Bayern Munich joining Monchengladbach in the last 16.
There will be three representatives from the Premier League, after Manchester United’s chastising 3-2 defeat by RB Leipzig cost them their place in the tournament. But Manchester City, Liverpool and Chelsea topped their respective groups, which guarantees them a tie against an unseeded group runner-up.
