Men and women have different motivations in hooking up, study finds

A recent study asked 150 female and 71 male college students to list the top 3 benefits and top 3 risks associated with hooking up from a list. Both sexes preferred traditional dating to hooking up, although women were much more likely than men to prefer traditional dating to hooking up (41 percent as opposed to 20 percent)(Springer, 2010).

Likewise, many more men showed a preference for hooking up over traditional dating (2 percent as opposed to 17 percent)(Springer, 2010). In both cases, however, it was clear that both men and women preferred dating to hooking up.

The study also revealed, predictably, in light of the aforementioned results, that women were more likely to want a relationship than men did. However, both had the same fears in both; namely, that they will become emotionally attached to someone who does not share their feelings for them (Springer, 2010). Men were much more likely to value independence and to express a fear that women would desire a committed relationship.
