The Honourable Mary Morrison, the monarch’s Woman of the Bedchamber, reportedly had the accident last Wednesday when she was attending a party with the Queen at her summer holiday residence in Scotland.

A source said that 81-year-old Miss Morrison “nearly sent the Queen flying” when she fell down the stairs as the pair made their way to the party.

The monarch was left “shocked and worried” following the incident, the Daily Mail reported.

The Queen’s loyal aide, who is frequently pictured with Her Majesty, was taken to hospital in Aberdeen after the accident.

But Miss Morrison, who has been at the Queen’s side for more than 50 years, has already returned to the Scottish castle despite her injury, where she is using crutches to carry out her duties.

Miss Morrison has a close relationship with the Queen, who she has served since 1960.

She was made a Dame Grand Cross of the Royal Victorian Order in 2013 – an award given for personal service to the monarch.

The Queen’s husband Prince Philip is another recipient of the prestigious honour, after being made a Knight Grand Cross of the Royal Victorian Order last year.

Miss Morrison has opted not to use the title ‘Dame’ and continues to use her inherited title.

Her accident comes as the Queen is enjoying her annual summer holiday in Balmoral, where she has been joined by members of the royal family including the Duke of Edinburgh who had a hip replacement operation this year and retired from royal duties last August.

Prince Charles, Camilla, Prince William and Kate, Duchess of Cambridge, are among the family members who have visited the Queen at her estate.

Despite being on holiday, the monarch has been keeping a busy schedule.

The Queen has regularly been spotted on her way to church at Crathie Kirk as well as attending the Highland Games.

She also met with prime minister Theresa May who travelled to Scotland to update the monarch on Brexit earlier this month.
