The photograph has been colourised by Richard James Molloy, an artist from Harrogate, North Yorkshire.

An 18-year-old Elizabeth is seen in military uniform and leaning out of the side of an Army jeep.

One royal fan posted on Reddit: “Can really see the resemblance in Princess Charlotte with this picture.”

Another exclaimed: “William really resembles her. She was the winner of the dna pass along.”

A third wrote: “William is all Diana in my eyes, but Princess Charlotte looks exactly like the Queen to me.”

Queen Elizabeth, now 92, served in the Armed Forces during the Second World War.

She learned to drive and operated a first-aid truck for the Women’s Auxiliary Territorial Service, becoming the first female member of the Royal Family to join the Armed Forces for full-time service.

Her military career progressed until she became an Honorary Brigadier in the Women’s Royal Army Corps in 1949, a position she held until her coronation in 1953.

The colour picture gives a rare insight into a younger Elizabeth, as she begins to develop the strong sense of duty and national service which would define the rest of her life and make her famous worldwide.

It also provides a delightful snapshot of the strong family genes of the Windsors, as fans gleefully point out that the young queen bears a striking resemblance to her great-granddaughter Princess Charlotte.

Princess Charlotte, who is three-years-old, seems to share other traits in common with the Queen, nicknamed Gan-Gan.

Royal analysts have noted they both have just one pair of favourite shoes that they wear for most of their royal appearances.

The Queen has favoured her Anello & Davide classic leather shoes for countless royal engagements over the last 50 years.

Following in her footsteps, Princess Charlotte has selected a pair of blue or maroon Mary-Jane style shoes with a frilly design and a metal button as her footwear of choice on special occasions.
