Royal commentator and author Victoria Arbiter warned that the wedding could leave the daughter of Sarah Ferguson and Prince Andrew open to “negative and hurtful criticism”.

Celebrations for the royal wedding – the second this year after Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s in May – are reported to be taking place over two days.

Writing in her column for Australian media outlet 9Honey, Ms Arbiter said: “While I don’t believe Eugenie is interested in one-upping her cousin, the three separate parties, split over the course of two days, do rather smack of Andrew and Fergie-style excess, which leaves their youngest daughter open to a swathe of negative and in some cases hurtful criticism.”

The royal expert added that public opinion is “rarely favourable”.

She said: “As a private royal, Eugenie can pretty much do whatever she wants when it comes to her wedding celebrations, but unfortunately public perception is rarely favourable.”

Eugenie, 28, and Mr Brooksbank are due to marry on October 12 at the same Windsor location as the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.

Some 850 guests are said to be attending the wedding and the ninth-in-line to the throne has invited 1,200 members of the public to the grounds of Windsor Castle.

The couple, who announced their engagement in January, will also take a carriage ride through Windsor following the ceremony, as Harry and Meghan did.

It has been reported that security for the lavish event will cost the taxpayer £2million.

But the wedding will not be broadcast by the BBC, despite millions watching Harry and Meghan’s day.

Speculation is growing over which designer Eugenie has chosen for her wedding dress.

Caroline Castigliano, royal expert and couture wedding dress designer, said: “Eugenie’s sense of fashion is just different to Kate and Megan, she is younger and has an entirely different body shape, so her choices would not be the same.

Ms Castigliano added: “I hope she has a fabulous wedding day and I am sure she will look stunning, she is an incredibly pretty girl.”

Speaking on The One Show in August, the Duchess of York said her daughter “knows exactly what she wants” for her wedding.

She said: “She is so sorted. She knows exactly what she wants.

“Jack and her are very contemporary, they are very inclusive.

“They are all about love and they want this wedding to be about that – to include everybody, to really absorb the love they have for each other with everybody else.”
