Wood, a member of the Rolling Stones since 1975 and a supporter of conservation charities for 30 years, has designed one of the 21 sculptures which are currently dotted around central London on the Tusk Rhino Trail.

“I know about your music, I didn’t know you could turn your hand to this,” William said, after Wood, accompanied by his wife Sally, showed him a picture of his rhino, created in honour of a real rhino called Spike that he sponsors.

The sculpture is currently in Carnaby Street.

The sculpture shows a scene from the savanna, along with the colours of the flags from countries where rhinos live.

“I love that,” the Duke said.

“You’ve been supporting the cause longer than me. Thank you for doing it, I really appreciate it.”

William, who saw seven sculptures in the palace gardens, also met the pair behind his children’s favourite book, The Gruffalo.

Illustrator Axel Scheffler and writer Julia Donaldson, who created the much-loved children’s classic, had decorated their own rhino.

As the pair tried to introduce themselves, William, 36, told them: “I know who you are. It’s a big hit in our household, The Gruffalo.”

Gesturing to the rhino, which can be seen from his windows, he added: “It’s amazing, I love it. You can tell it’s you guys. It’s the eyes [of the animals] I think, you can always tell the eyes.”

William has been royal patron of Tusk Trust since 2005.
