Right before she gave birth to her second child, Prince Harry, Diana said she and Charles became “very, very close to each other” – but one moment changed it all.

In a 1991 interview, the Princes of Wales revealed the five words that made her marriage take a turn for the worst.

According to Andrew Morton’s book on Diana’s life, Diana: Her True Story, the late princess revealed the heart-breaking sentence Charles said to her when Harry was born was: “Oh God, it’s a boy.”

Despite Charles insisting he was just “joking”, Diana was very much hurt by his comment.

Diana knew the gender of her baby before Charles, “because she saw the scan” but kept it a secret because she knew he “wanted a girl”.

The Princess of Wales also revealed how Charles complained to her mother, Frances Shand Kydd, over the baby’s gender, saying he was “so disappointed – we thought it would be a girl”.

Furious at Charles’ comment, Ms Kydd “snapped his head off”, according to Diana, telling him he should “realise how lucky you are to have a child that’s normal”.

In 2014, Prince Charles had also reportedly “hoped” his son, Prince William and Kate, the Duchess of Cambridge would have a baby girl.

This was not the first time Charles made hurtful comments to Diana.

When Harry was born, Charles talked about how his son had “even got red hair” – a trait that runs in Diana’s family.

She described how Harry was a “miracle” and “a complete joy” to her life, but said that his birth marked the starting point where her marriage with Charles went “down the drain”.

After Charles’ comments, the late princess said “something inside me closed off” as their marriage broke down shortly after, and the couple divorced a few years later.

Princess Diana married Charles on 29 July 1981 at St Paul’s Cathedral in London, in a riveting ceremony viewed by millions all over the world.

Their relationship broke down over the years, with allegations that Charles had an affair with Camilla Parker-Bowles, who he had a brief relationship with in the 1970s.

Diana said she went to the Queen for advice, but Her Majesty replied: “I don’t know what you should do, Charles is hopeless.”

Despite Charles unfaithfulness, Diana also admitted to having an affair with ex-captain James Hewitt.

Diana said: “There were three of us in this marriage so it was a bit crowded.”

The royal couple split in 1992, and officially divorced in 1996 after the Queen sent a personal later to the pair, advising them to end their marriage.

After the divorce, Charles said his relationship with Camilla was “non-negotiable”.

Princess Diana died on 31 August 1997 in a Paris car crash.
