As he attended a reception at the Baltic arts centre in Tyneside, the Duke of Cambridge was given a Newcastle United football shirt by Exhibition chairman Sir Gary Verity.

Prince William, who is a passionate Aston Villa supporter, opened the box while smiling but kept shaking his head at the same time.

As he took the t-shirt out, he exclaimed: “Oh my goodness.

“I don’t know about this.”

He then told Sir Gary: “It’s very kind.

“This is going to make my football team discussions a lot harder.”

It is no secret that Prince William is an avid Villa supporter.

During his historic five-day tour in the Middle East three months ago, he was given numerous Villa-theme gifts on his first day in Jordan.

The father-of-three visited Tyneside as part of the Great Exhibition for the North Celebration, which hopes to spark a renewed interest in the North of England’s pioneering spirit.

He listened to performances at the Sage Gateshead including those from the centre’s CoMusic programme, which uses music to engage young people with life challenges.

He was then given a tour of the technology centre in Gateshead, which tests and creates digital solutions of businesses.

The Great Exhibition, which began in June and will finish this Sunday, September 9.

It is hosting various art, culture, design and innovation exhibitions to tell the story of how the region has been shaped.

It has been the country’s biggest event in 2018 over the 80 days that it has been open.

The next Royal engagement for Duke of Cambridge will be at Acorns Children’s Hospice in Selly Oak, Birmingham, and his visit curiously coincides with an Aston Villa match.
