The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have added another canine friend to their family, who will join Meghan’s pet, a beagle named Guy, who she brought over from Canada.

Meghan and Harry decided to choose a black labrador, because black pets often do not get adopted at shelters, according to one top dog trainer.

Eryn Martyn-Godfrey, at Believe In Magic Dog Training & Behaviour in London, said black dogs often get left behind at shelters, and do not get adopted as readily as pets with lighter coloured fur coats.

She told Express.co.uk: “Black dogs often don’t get adopted or rescued, and in shelters they’re often the last to be picked because of their coat colour.

“Black cats and dogs often get that taboo, and according to statistics in the UK and US this is an ongoing problem seen at adoption centres.”

Labradors are also friendly, get along well with children, and are good with other dogs, said Ms Godfrey, making it easier for the royal couple’s new addition to buddy up with Guy, Meghan’s beagle.

Ms Godfrey added: “Labradors are very easy to train and are very reliable dogs. They do get along very well with children, so if Meghan and Harry have any they will interact with them just fine.

“They also don’t often have health issues so they’re a good breed choice, and they’re a medium sized breed so they’re not too big or too small.

“Labradors are also used as guide dogs for the blind and deaf because they’re quick learners, and very adaptable.

“They’re easy to train, and they can even open and close doors, take shoes and socks off and many other things.”

Ms Godfrey also said Meghan might have chosen a rescue dog, instead of buying one from a breeder, because of the beagle.

She added: “Labradors are also good with other dogs, which might be a reason Meghan chose a rescue dog – so Guy could interact with him and they could see how the two got along, before bringing him back home with them.”

Meghan, 37, also owns another rescue dog, Bogart, who remains in Toronto, Canada with her friends.

She was unable to bring him along to the UK ahead of her wedding to husband, Prince Harry, in May, because he was deemed too old to travel.

Meghan is known for her love of dogs, and regularly posted pictures of her and her two pets on her Instagram page, before it was shut down.

One picture showed the Duchess snuggling up next to her two dogs, Guy and Bogart, who appeared to be sleeping cosily next to Meghan.

Thursday marks 100 days since the Duchess of Sussex joined the royal family, after she married Prince Harry on 19 May, 2018, at St George’s Chapel in Windsor.

In October, Meghan and Harry will embark on a tour of Australia, New Zealand, Fiji and Tongo.

They will be hosting the Invictus Games in Sydney, created by Prince Harry, allowing wounded armed service personnel and veterans to participate in multiple sporting events.

The royals will join the Crown Princess Mary of Denmark and husband Prince Frederik at the Invictus Games, along with David Beckham, who is an ambassador for the ceremony.
