Harry told leading figures that the UK and Ireland had a “very special relationship between two proud, sovereign countries”.

He also made fun of his father, Prince Charles, saying how pleased he was to see that the recent trip by his father, to Ireland had not bored them “senseless”.

In his speech, the Duke of Sussex acknowledged the history between Ireland and the UK and told guests: “We’re so pleased to be here, for our first official international visit together as a married couple, and we hope it will be the first of many!

“As each other’s closest neighbours, the UK and Ireland’s relationship is unique; our shared history is long and complex.”

“There have of course been challenging, and at times tragic, periods of that relationship.

“Tomorrow we hope to have the opportunity to reflect on some of those difficult passages in our history when we visit Croke Park and the Famine Memorial.”

Prince Harry added that the visit will also be used to celebrate “just how much unites” the UK and Ireland.

He continued: “This is a very special relationship between two proud, sovereign countries.

“We share common values; culture, business links, family ties, and possibly a similar sense of humour.

“Our relationship is of course informed by our history, but it is also one which is now dynamic and forward-looking.”

The Royal couple started a two-day tour of Dublin and celebrated the Irish as soon as they stepped from their private plane.

At the official Dublin residence of Britain’s ambassador to Ireland, Meghan wore a Givenchy creation in a colour that surely flattered the Irish.

She wore a black dress for the RAF 100th celebrations earlier.

Then she went for a green Givenchy skirt and top as she arrived in Dublin before changing into a little black dress.

The pair are due to visit key attractions including Trinity College where they will see the Book of Kells and participate in a Gaelic sports festival at Croke Park.

Also, the Duke and Duchess will visit the Famine Memorial where they will have a moment for reflection before visiting EPIC, which is the Irish Emigration Museum.

Meghan and Harry will hear the story of the 10million Irish people who have emigrated across the world.

Commenting on the tour, Kensington Palace added: “The Royal couple are looking forward to learning more about Ireland’s history and experiencing its rich culture, as well as meeting the people who are shaping the country’s future.”

Meghan and Harry are expected to create a massive boost to the Irish tourism economy as they carry out a busy schedule of engagements.
