The African-American diocesan disclosed he was diagnosed several months ago after an annual physical and announced he will have surgery on Tuesday to remove the prostrate gland.

In a letter, which was released by the Church, Bishop Curry wrote: “After a variety of tests, consultations and conversations with my wife and daughters, I decided on a surgical treatment course.

“I am happy to say that the prognosis looks very good and quite positive.

“I have spoken with several others who have gone through this, and who have offered both encouragement and helpful advice.

“I will be in the hospital for at least a day, then at home to recuperate.”

The diocesan added his recuperation time will be between four and six weeks.

Despite the surgery, Bishop Curry claimed he does not anticipate any changes to his commitments.

He is scheduled to speak at a fundraiser for Day1 Media Ministry in Atlanta on September 6.

In the letter, Bishop Curry continued: “I am very blessed with a wonderful family, a first-rate medical team, a great staff, dear colleagues and friends, a calling to which I have given my life, and above all a good, great and loving God in whose hands we always remain.

“So, do say a prayer.

“And know that I look forward to being back at my post in September.”

The Most Rev Bishop Michael Curry, the first black presiding bishop and primate of the Episcopal Church, gave an address titled the Power of Love at the Royal Wedding.

The US bishop, along with the gospel choir, brought a flavour of the American bride’s homeland with the speech at St George’s Chapel in Windsor.

Bride and groom Meghan and Harry – as well as other members of the Royal Family – appeared to hold back laughter as the energetic Curry praised for 14 minutes high heavens and preached about the power of love.

His down to earth quote “two young people fell in love, and we all showed up”, was used in headlines on papers around the world, and he movingly quoted civil rights leader Martin Luther King.
