The Duchess of Sussex, 36, is taking bold fashion choices that makes the world admire her as an icon, according to Vanessa Collen, founder of luxury independent fashion boutique, Collen & Clare.

The way Meghan plays with fashion conventions, the expert said, is reminiscent of Diana.

Ms Collen told Express.co.uk: “We can all look to Meghan to flex the rules a little and push boundaries in the same way that Diana did.

“Meghan combines her femininity and openness to make the world admire her.”

The Duchess, who Ms Collen believes has the “potential to become an icon similar to Diana”, is expressing her personality through her outfits.

Despite being respectful of the royal etiquette, Ms Collen believes Meghan is expressing her “confident and strong spirit” with brave choices, which could take the Royal Family in a “new direction”.

Ms Collen said: “Our fashion choices each day influence our behaviour and how the world sees us.

“Historically we have seen members of the Royal family wear a lot of colour, be it muted or bold, to stand out from the crowds of well-wishers.

“To see Meghan wearing a lot of black, navy and cream does seem to hint at a new direction – she absolutely stands out in a crowd, exuding confidence and warmth.”

And Meghan’s choice of handbag – often a crossbody bag rather than a traditional royal clutch – expresses her desire to keep a more commoner-like contact with the public.

Ms Collen said: “They never act as a barrier, just part of the overall silhouette.”

The Duchess’ desire to be perceived as “approachable” is also highlighted by other fashion experts.

Kubi Springer, branding expert and founder of SheBuildsBrands, believes Meghan is following a clear style, which is reinforcing her “branding”.

She told Express.co.uk: “Since the wedding, her royal engagements have seen her in nude colours and pale pinks, to reinforce her brand as classic, not overwhelming but still approachable.

“What’s also interesting is that whilst the dresses have been nude the design style as been very on-trend.

“She wore a Givenchy shirt dress for Ascot, a Givenchy cape dress for her trip with the Queen and a off-the-shoulder Caroline Herrera dress to Trooping the Colour 2018.

“These styles reinforce that her brand personality is soft, classic, warm but very much in the know of the last trends.”

Yet, all of Meghan’s choices are also a “way of showing respect” to the monarch, Ms Springer pointed out.

She said: “The nude choices are also a way of showing respect to the Queen by wearing colours that do not attempt to upstage her anyway during their trip to Cheshire together.”
