Meghan was today named the best dressed woman of 2018 by People magazine in a rare royal accolade by the celebrity publication.

The Duchess of Sussex beat Hollywood style icons Kim Kardashian, 37, and Amal Clooney, 40 – who wowed in a yellow canary Stella McCartney dress at Meghan and Prince Harry’s wedding in May – to win the top title.

Andrea Lavinthal, People’s Style and Beauty editor, singled out Meghan’s style for being “the one that really had the spotlight this year”.

She said: “Whether she is wearing a classic button down shirt and ripped jeans, like any other girl, or a couture wedding gown and a tiara, unlike most of us, she always looks effortlessly chic.

“There is something about her that looks polished without being too perfect.”

Why is it so rare for Meghan to have won this award?

Prince Harry’s bride has been favoured by fashion designers for some time because of her simple yet elegant attire and focus on well-cut garments.

But it is the decision of the celebrity magazine to award the honour to a Royal Family member which makes it such an unusual move.

Ms Lavinthal explained: “We have never had the list with royals or anyone outside of Hollywood.

“But when you talk about style and 2018 you cannot have that conversation without mentioning Meghan Markle.”

Meghan’s flair for fashion was also picked up by Vanity Fair, which today put the duchess on its annual best dressed list 2018.

Adding the royal to its list of 42 names, Vanity Fair said she her style “has evolved into a much sleeker, high-fashion look”.

The fashion bible said: “She’s the most daring of the royal fashion pack, and her signature boatneck cut and monochromatic color choices exhibit classic polish.”

Meghan, 37, was featured along with A-listers Rihanna, 30, Serena Williams, 36, Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, both 32.

What did Meghan wear at the WellChild awards?

The Duchess impressed just yesterday in a demure Altuzarra black suit, pair with a matching clutch bag, at the WellChild awards in London.

Fashion blog Meghan’s Mirror called her outfit “unsurprisingly chic”, adding Meghan “loves a menswear inspired style”.

Has Kate, Duchess of Cambridge also won a fashion award?

Meghan has not won all the top style awards this week, missing out on the title of eBay’s top royal style influencer to sister-in-law Kate, the Duchess of Cambridge.

Kate was said to have the biggest impact on consumer shopping habits this year, according to the online giant’s UK Retail Report.

Ebay said her maternity style during her recent pregnancy with Prince Louis “generated more online searches on eBay than any other royal over the past year”.
