Doria was the only member of Meghan’s family to attend the Royal Wedding in May, where she captured hearts as she watched her daughter become a princess while choking back tears of pride.

The two are obviously close, often snapped heading to yoga together or sharing a laugh in the past.

Now, the 61-year-old is said to be “beside herself” with excitement at the prospect of joining the Duke and Duchess of Sussex in the UK.

In what was seen as the first gesture before the big move, Doria quit her job as a social worker for the Didi Hirsch Mental Health Services clinic in Culver City, LA.

Why is Doria Ragland moving to London?

Aside from the obvious benefit of being closer to her daughter, it is thought Doria wants to be close by to support Meghan through the near-constant embarrassments at the hand of her father, Thomas Markle.

Thomas has been a frequent source of media fodder since the run-up to Meghan and Harry’s wedding when he admitted colluding with a paparazzi photographer to pose for flattering ‘candid’ shots of himself.

The 74-year-old left his daughter devastated when he pulled out of walking her down the aisle just days before the highly-publicised wedding, citing heart problems.

And since the wedding, Thomas has not gone quietly – continuing to heap fresh embarrassment on his daughter.

First, there was the explosive interview with ITV’s Good Morning Britain where Thomas dropped a few major bombs.

Speaking to the popular breakfast show, Thomas claimed Prince Harry said he should “give Donald Trump a chance” and was “open to the experiment of Brexit.”

The Royal Family is widely expected to keep their political alignments private.

Thomas also revealed “there’s got to be a child in the making, somewhere soon,” despite the couple making no announcement about starting a family.

Then in another interview with the Mail on Sunday, Thomas blasted his daughter, saying: “She’d be nothing without me.

“I made her the Duchess she is today. Everything that Meghan is, I made her.”

He said he had been totally cut off by the Royal Family since the ITV interview and that “perhaps it would be easier for Meghan if I died.”

Meghan has remained tight-lipped throughout her father’s tirades but sources have said she’s taking the strain.

One source told the Mail Online: “For the life of her, she can’t understand why he’s digging such a deep hole for himself and to say things like that.”

The source also revealed it’s not the first time she’s dealt with her dad’s self-pity, describing him as a “narcissist”.

So it seems Doria Ragland’s timing is perfect, as she swoops in to provide some stability from Meghan’s side of the family.

A close friend in LA said: “She is getting ready to move to London. I think she will be going as soon as possible. I know that she was eager to live closer to her daughter.

“She hasn’t been staying at her house for a while now. She has only visited the house very occasionally and when she is there she has had a security guard with her.

“He has been with her since about November.

“She is fiercely loyal to Meghan and would never betray her like the rest of them. They are so close.

“She also fell in love with England and told me when she got back that it’s somewhere she believes she too could happily live.

“I think this has been coming for a while. Even before the wedding, she told me how she misses her Megs so much she would do anything to be closer to her, especially now Meghan will be starting a family of her own.”

Prince Harry has publicly expressed his fondness for his mother in law.

During the couple’s first interview after their engagement, they spoke of spending time with Doria.

Meghan said the couple had spent “a lot of time” with her, “who is so much fun.”

Harry added: “Her mum’s amazing.”

There’s no doubt that when the Duke and Duchess do decide to start a family, Doria will be a hands-on grandma welcomed into the fold by the royals.
