Serena made the comments to Australian news programme The Sunday Project, just as the controversy about her outbursts during the US Open final began to simmer down.
Both women have experienced an unprecedented amount of media and public attention this year, with Serena returning to professional tennis after having a baby and Meghan joining the Royal Family.
She said about her friendship with Meghan: “We were actually just texting each other this morning.
“We have known each other for a long time, but we really kind of are relying on each other a lot recently.”
How long have Meghan and Serena been friends?
The pair met at a Super Bowl party in 2010 and have been firm friends for eight years.
Describing their first meeting on her former blog The Tig, Meghan wrote: “Taking pictures, laughing through the flag football game we were both playing and chatting, not about tennis or acting but about good old-fashioned girly stuff.”
The Duchess of Sussex also described how the pair “hit it off immediately.”
Serena agrees – in 2017, she said: “We have always supported each other, just been there for each other through a lot.”
Since they met, a firm friendship has blossomed, with the two often seen out and about supporting each other.
Before her Wimbledon final in 2018, Serena said: “Every year for a couple years Meghan comes out to Wimbledon and has supported me.”
Meghan was there watching her friend beside her sister-in-law, Kate, Duchess of Cambridge this year and has been seen at Centre Court in previous years before she joined the Royal Family.
Serena and her husband Alexis Ohanian were amongst the guests invited to Meghan and Prince Harry’s exclusive wedding after-party.
Speaking about the wedding, Serena said: “To have such a monumental moment in England, nonetheless of all the places, I felt like we were literally watching history.
“I feel like in a few years we are going to look back at that moment and it’s going to be so historic.
“It’s going to be something that people never forget.
“The whole service was really wonderful, and most of all I just wanted to see my friend be happy.”
Last week, Serena posted a playful tribute to Meghan in celebration of her involvement with a charity cookbook written by women affected by the Grenfell Tower tragedy.
She wrote: “I used to call you Meghan (and I still do) but dear Duchess of Sussex your first project ‘Together’ a cookbook bringing women of all cultures together.
“I could not be more excited about it and proud of you.”
