Meghan spoke about the discreet addition to her elegant gown during a new ITV documentary about the Queen and Her Majesty’s role as a figure on the global stage.

Her first official interview as a royal, for the programme called Queen Of The World, reunited her with the dress for the first time since the ceremony at St George’s Chapel on May 19.

The Duchess said she was keen to adhere to the bride’s tradition of having “something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue” on her big day.

“My goodness, It’s amazing, isn’t it?,” said the Duchess to Royal Collection Exhibitions co-ordinator Hannah Belcher, while running her fingers through the delicate fabric.

“Somewhere in here, there’s a piece of… did you see it? The piece of blue fabric that’s stitched inside? It was my ‘something blue’ It’s fabric from the dress that I wore on our first date.”

She did not reveal what old, new or borrowed items she selected.

American-born Meghan first met Harry on a blind date at London’s Soho House, in June 2016, which was reportedly set up by mutual friend Violet von Westenholz. During the documentary, Meghan marvelled at the intricate handiwork that went into her wedding veil, which was embroidered with flowers from each of the 53 Commonwealth nations.

The delicate 16ft garment also featured wintersweet, which grows in the garden at Nottingham Cottage, where she lives with Prince Harry, and the California poppy, which grows in her home state.

Meghan recalled: “It was important for me, especially now being a part of the Royal Family, to have all 53 of the Commonwealth countries incorporated, and I knew that it would be a fun surprise as well for my now husband, who didn’t know, and he was really over the moon to find out that I would make this choice for our day together.

“I think the other members of the family had a similar reaction, so, yeah, it was good news all around, I think. I hope people liked it as much as I liked helping to create it.”

Meghan entrusted the design of her wedding dress to Clare Waight Keller, the British artistic director for Givenchy Couture, whom she chose for her timeless and elegant style.
