Princess Diana was killed in a car crash in Paris on 31 August 1997 – a tragedy that shook the country to the core.
21 years on royal fans and Diana’s friends are sharing mementoes and pictures of the unforgettable Lady Di to mark the anniversary of her death. .
Taking to Twitter earlier today to share a glimpse of how Diana was among friends, the princess’s close friend Rosa Monckton posted: “Diana as I remember her.
“Not enough is written about her sense of fun and zest for life.
“Friend and wonderful godmother to Domenica. RIP”
The touching message was completed by a picture, showing a laid back Diana wearing a sweater and loose trousers laughing heartily with her eyes closed.
The princess and Ms Monckton shared a special bond, as Diana was the godmother of Domenica, the charity campaigner’s elder daughter.
They also had a passion for helping people in need in common – Ms Monckton is the founder of a charity helping young adults with learning disabilities to find work.
The gates of Kensington Palace, the London house where Princess Diana saw her children William and Harry grow up, have been inundated of kind messages and pictures of the People’s Princess left by royal fans.
While thousands are publicly mourning Diana, her sons are spending the day remembering their mother far from the public eye.
Kensington Palace has published no engagements for the princes on August 31.
A spokeswoman for the young royals told Express.co.uk: “There is no official engagement planned and we don’t have a comment on what the family would be doing.”
But last year, on the 20th anniversary of Diana’s death, the princes spoke publicly about their beloved mother, sharing their favourite memories regarding her and discussing the impact her death had on them.
Prince William revealed he often speaks to her children about the grandmother they never met.
He said: “It’s important they know who she was and that she existed.”
Diana passed away just one year after her divorce from Prince Charles was finalised.
The night she died, she was in Paris with her new partner Dodi, the son of Egyptian tycoon Mohamed Al-Fayed.
