Prince Charles and Princess Diana married on 29 July 1981 at St Paul’s Cathedral, in a riveting ceremony watched by almost 750 million people across the world.
A few days later, the royal couple jetted off to Gibraltar for their honeymoon, sailing the seas in the Royal Yacht Britannia.
Charles and Diana spent 14 days at sea, cruising the Mediterranean towards the Greek Islands in what seemed like a fairytale honeymoon trip.
However, Diana revealed their honeymoon was in fact, not as magical as it seemed.
Speaking in a series of secret interviews, documented by Channel 4’s ‘Diana: In Her Own Words’, the Princess of Wales said she always felt there were “three” people in her marriage.
On the day of their honeymoon, she noticed Charles wearing a pair of cufflinks with two letter ‘C’s embedded on them.
Realising they were a gift from Camilla, Charles’ ex-girlfriend, Diana confronted him, but he dismissed any suspicions the pair were having an affair.
Diana said: “We were opening our diaries to discuss various things. Out comes two pictures of Camilla.
“And on our honeymoon, cufflinks arrive on his wrists. Two C’s entwined like the Chanel ‘C’. Got it. One knew exactly.
“So I said ‘Camilla gave you those didn’t she?’ He said ‘Yes, so what’s wrong? They’re a present from a friend.'”
“And boy, did we have a row. Jealousy, total jealousy. And it was such a good idea the two ‘C’s but it wasn’t that clever.”
In a series of letters written by the Princess herself, Diana revealed that her honeymoon was “a perfect opportunity to catch up on sleep”.
The Princess of Wales has had a long-standing battle with bulimia, which she said was especially “rife” during her honeymoon trip.
Diana added: “By then the bulimia was appalling, absolutely appalling. It was rife. It was four times a day on the yacht.
“Anything I could find I would gobble up and be sick two minutes later. We survived that alright. And we went off to Balmoral straight from the yacht.
“Everyone was there to welcome us and the realisation set in.
“My dreams were appalling at night, I dreamt of Camilla the whole time. Everybody saw me getting thinner and thinner and thinner, and I was getting sicker and sicker and sicker.
“Basically they thought I could adapt being Princess of Wales overnight.”
The secret interviews were recorded between the end of 1992 and mid-1993, with her then voice coach, Peter Settelen.
Diana said: “Everyone in the family knew about the bulimia, and everyone blamed the bulimia for the failure of the marriage.”
She explained how the eating disorder was the most “discreet” way to harm herself rather than abusing alcohol or being anorexic, which would be easily caught on by the media.
Princess Diana died on 31 August 1997 in a car crash in Paris.
