The couple met Ireland’s President Michael D Higgins and his wife Sabina at their official residence and then wowed the crowds in the city later in the day.

Harry, 33, and Meghan, 36, visited some of Dublin’s most famous landmarks on a whistlestop tour of the Irish capital.

Some greetings were more painful than others.

At Croke Park, a Gaelic sports stadium, four-year-old Dylan Mahon welcomed the royals by pulling Harry’s beard. As the sixth in line to the throne grimaced in mock pain, the Duchess stifled a laugh.

Harry told the youngster: “You might have a beard soon – you never know.”

The royal couple met children taking part in Gaelic football, hurling and other sports programmes.

Meghan, too, faced an unorthodox greeting at the stadium when three-yearold Walter Kieran stroked her hair when he met her.

The royal couple met President Higgins and Sabina at their official residence, Aras an Uachtarain, the former British Viceregal lodge located in Dublin’s Phoenix Park.

The two couples formed a line and rang a peace bell, installed in the garden of the grand 18th-century house in 2008, to mark the 10th anniversary of Northern Ireland’s Good Friday peace agreement.

Harry and Meghan then toured the grounds with the presidential couple and their two Bernese mountain dogs, Brod and Sioda.

But the couple’s plan to have a quiet meal at the Delahunt restaurant went pear-shaped when an estimated 500-strong crowd gathered outside in the hope of catching a glimpse of the royals.

Harry and Meghan spent an hour at the restaurant, where they enjoyed some traditional Irish cuisine, with the Duchess reportedly sampling a “small glass of Guinness”.

MY VERDICT

IN her new role as the Duchess of Sussex, Meghan Markle has been racking up major fashion points with her outfits but on day two of her first overseas trip with her new husband the former actress failed to win plaudits with her initial outfit.

Starting off in a taupe bateau necked dress by Roland Mouret, Meghan seemed unaware of her fashion faux pas but the body of the dress appeared too long, leading to excess fabric bunching around her slender waist.

This, coupled with the visible outline of her strapless bra, was not the stylish ensemble that we’ve come to expect from the newest royal.

Despite the dress fail, the new Duchess’ accessories were certainly fit for royalty – her Fendi ‘Peakaboo Essential’ bag will set you back £3,850 while her diamond earrings by Canadian jewellers Maison Birks retail for £6,886.

It’s interesting to note that Meghan appeared to have eschewed tights on this occasion, breaking with royal protocol.

Less than two hours later, Meghan was back to her stylish self in a chic fitted trousers suit by Claire Waight Keller for Givenchy, who also designed her wedding dress.

Literally letting her hair down, Meghan looked far more at ease in her signature suiting.

With her hair falling soft waves around her shoulders, the Duchess was seen grinning broadly as she strolled to the couple’s next meeting in a pair of Sarah Flint heels.

Coupling her look with simple black accessories also by Givenchy, the Duchess gave her suit a modern spin by adding a crisp white T-shirt underneath for a chic laid-back twist on a classic tailored look that saw her fashion points rise once more.
