Prince Louis will be baptised on July 9 at the same church as Prince George – The Chapel Royal of St James’s Palace in central London.

The service will be conducted by the Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby.

Since his birth, Louis has not been seen in public and was not at the wedding of his uncle Prince Harry and Meghan Markle in May nor at the Trooping of the Colour celebrations on June 9 for the Queen’s official birthday.

However his older siblings Prince George, 4, and sister Charlotte, 3, were both front and centre at these special royal occasions.

How old were George and Charlotte at their christenings?

The christening of Prince Louis takes place shortly after his birth on April 23, when the youngest Prince of Cambridge will be 11 weeks old.

Prince George was only three months when he was christened in London on October 23, 2013.

Princess Charlotte was only nine weeks at her christening, but one of the longest royal waits for a christening was for Eugenie, who was nine months old.

George, the first-born of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, was born in London on July 22.

The godparents were announced on the day of the christening, a total of seven chosen for the baby prince, including Prince William’s cousin, Zara Tindall.

For Charlotte, Kate and William chose three close friends, a Spencer relative and a Middleton relative for their daughter’s godparents but no members of the royal family.

Royal babies traditionally used to have kings and queens and other royals as godparents.

The baptism of Princess Charlotte was carried out by the Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby at the church of St Mary Magdalene on the Sandringham estate in Norfolk.

The same church Princess Charlotte’s late grandmother Princess of Wales was baptised and where the Royal family worship every Christmas Day.

Charlotte was born on May 2, 2015 and christened in Norfolk on July 5.

Both the Cambridge children wore a replica of a Victorian gown made by the Queen’s dressmaker Angela Kelly in 2004.

The original Honiton lace overlay was used at every royal christening from 1841 to 2004 and was worn by 62 babies before it was deemed too fragile to wear.

Queen Victoria had the original commissioned for the christening of her daughter Princess Victoria, the Princess Royal.

James, Viscount Severn, son of the Earl and Countess of Wessex was the first Royal baby to wear the new gown and his sister Lady Louise Windsor was the last royal to wear the original gown in 2004.

According to tradition, the water used for Louis’s christening will be holy water from the River Jordan, where it is said Jesus was baptised by John the Baptist.

Louis will also be christened using the ornate silver gilt Lily Font – part of the Crown Jewels.

It is decorated with lilies and ivy foliage around the rim, features three cherubs around the base, and the main bowl is a large lily bloom.
