Zara Tindall has given birth to a baby girl, with her husband Mike Tindall by her side, Buckingham Palace confirmed on Tuesday.

The newest member of the Royal Family was born on Monday at Stroud Maternity Unit weighing 9lbs 3oz.

Buckingham Palace said in a statement: “Mrs Michael Tindall was safely delivered of a baby girl on 18th June, at Stroud Maternity Unit.

“Mr Tindall was present at the birth. The weight of the baby was 9lbs 3oz.

“The Queen, The Duke of Edinburgh, The Princess Royal, Captain Mark Philips and Mike’s parents, Mr Philip and Mrs Linda Tindall, have bee informed and are delighted with the news.

“The baby’s name will be confirmed in due course.

“This baby is the second child for Zara and Mike, the fourth grandchild for The Princess Royal and the seventh great-grandchild for The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh.”

The baby is second cousin to Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis.

It is believed the Queen’s seventh great-grandchild is the heaviest royal baby born in recent years and beats the previous record held by Peter and Autumn Philips’ eldest daughter, Savannah, who weighed 8lb 8oz when she was born in 2010.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s third child Prince Louis weighed 8lbs 7oz when he was born on April 23, 2018.

Zara and Mike’s newborn baby girl was considerably heavier than her older sister, Mia, who weighed 7lb 12oz when she was born in 2014.

The announcement of the new arrival comes more than a year after Zara tragically suffered a miscarriage in December 2016 – one month after the couple announced Zara’s pregnancy.

Heavily pregnant Zara was last seen at the wedding of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex a month ago, accompanied by husband Mike Tindall.

What is the line of succession following birth of Zara’s baby?

The British royal line of succession previous followed a system of male preference primogeniture – where princes took precedence over their older sisters.

However since the introduction of the 2013 Succession to the Crown Act this is no longer the case.

Now the system works so males no longer overtake their older sisters in precedence.

Before the Act was instated a female royal’s claim to the throne would have been diminished by the birth of a younger boy.

When Prince Louis was born, Princess Charlotte still remained fourth in line to the throne, despite Louis being a boy and the newest Prince of Cambridge became fifth in line to the throne.

Zara’s baby is 19th in line to the throne and falls below her sister Mia Tindall who is 18th in line to the throne and was born in January 2014 and Zara is 17th in line to the throne after her niece Isla Philips.
