The Star Wars actor, 66, shot to global fame for his role as Luke Skywalker in the Star Wars franchise and first appeared in the 1977 blockbuster Star Wars: A New Hope.

By 1980 the actor, then 29, was a global superstar and met the Royal Family with his co-stars when promoting Star Wars sequel, The Empire Strikes Back.

Billy Dee Williams, who played Lando Calrissian in the film, revealed he played a hilarious prank on the actor, by telling him direct eye contact with a royal was “punishable by imprisonment in the Tower of London”.

As a result Hamill looked directly at the floor when he shook hands with Princess Margaret with the embarassing moment caught on camera.

Hamill wrote on Twitter on Wednesday: “This photo was snapped moments after @realbdw told me that direct eye contact with royalty was an offense punishable by imprisonment in the Tower of London. #Pranked.”

Despite the encounter, the event was not the last time Hamill would meet royalty.

In 1997, he was snapped sharing a joke with Prince Charles at the Star Wars: Special Edition premiere.

And his royal journey continued in 2016, when it was revealed Hamill spent time with Prince Harry and Prince William on the set of Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

The royal brothers both confessed to being big fans of the movies.

At the time, Hamill lsaid: “If I went towards royalty with my arms outstretched I would get arrested – but there’s something about a Wookie that means you just want to be hugged.”

Hamill called London a “second home” after telling the royals he spent a lot of time in the capital after filming the first three Star Wars movies.

Force Awakens star John Boyega confirmed William and Harry had cameo roles as Stormtroopers.

But their scenes were allegedy cut as they were deemed “to tall” for the roles.
