Her Majesty was forced to pull out of a morning service at St Paul’s Cathedral on June 28 after falling victim to a summer cold.

Buckingham Palace said the Queen was too “under the weather” to attend the event.

She made nine appearances in ten days before missing the ceremony.

But on July 2 she was back on her feet at the Ceremony of the Keys event in Edinburgh after recovering from her illness.

Royal expert Richard Fitzwilliams told Express.co.uk: “The Queen and her advisers have balanced commitments and advancing age superbly.

“Missing an engagement when she was feeling under the weather was only wise.

“She is in remarkably good health and a role model for others of an advanced age.”

This year has been a particularly busy year for Queen Elizabeth with two new great-grandchildren – Prince Louis and Zara Tindall’s daughter Lena Elizabeth and the wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.

Despite being in her 90s, the Queen still plays a very active role as monarch.

Mr Fitzwilliams added: “The Queen had undertaken 125 engagements by June 2018, a 25 percent increase on last year.”

She attended 296 engagements in 2017 and continues to tour the UK, however she has handed over foreign trips to younger members of the Royal Family.

Her Majesty rarely misses engagements.

In May, the Queen had eye surgery to remove a cataract, prior to attending her grandson Prince Harry’s wedding to Meghan Markle at Windsor Castle.

But she was treated as a day patient and did not cancel any planned appearances.

Mr Fitzwilliams concluded by saying: “There are reports that she needs knee surgery but is reluctant to spend time convalescing.”

It has been reported Her Majesty has been suffering worsening pain and also struggles to get up after sitting.

A Palace source told The Sun: “She was talking to friends at the Chelsea Flower Show and said her knees were playing up.

“But she is reluctant to have an operation due to the time it would take to recover.

“She is incredibly brave.

“People from her and Philip’s generation battle through problems and carry on.

“And Her Majesty doesn’t like to cause any fuss.”

Despite this, there has been no mention of the Queen retiring either to old age or ill health and an announcement is not expected any time soon either.
