Designers Elizabeth and David Emanuel opted to make the third dress over fears that the Princess’s first dress would be made public before her wedding day in 1981.

The designers also made a copy of Diana’s first dress, an ivory taffeta and antique lace gown, which was given to Madame Tussaud following her wedding to Prince Charles.

But the whereabouts of the third dress is now a mystery.

Speaking to the Daily Mail, Mrs Emanuel said the dress has gone missing.

She said: “It was only three-quarters finished — we simply didn’t have time to make it in its entirety, so none of the embroidery or finishing touches were done.

“It was hanging up in the studio for a long time, and then it disappeared.

“I don’t know if we sold it or put it into storage. It was such a busy time.”

She added: “I’m sure it’ll turn up in a bag one day!”

Mrs Emanuel revealed that the Princess was not aware of the third dress and she never tried it on.

But Diana might have worn the backup gown if the planned dress had not been kept a secret.

Mrs Emanuel said to People: “At the time we wanted to make absolutely sure that the dress was a surprise.

“Had the secret of the real dress got out it’s possible that Diana would actually have worn this one.

“We didn’t try it on Diana. We never even discussed it.

“We wanted to make sure that we had something there; it was for our own peace of mind, really.”

A global audience of 750 million people watched Diana walk down the aisle in her iconic dress but few people saw the perfume stain on the front of Diana’s gown on her wedding day.

In her book Diana: The Portrait, the Princess’s makeup artist Barbara Daly revealed Diana said: “I’ve just put my perfume on and I’ve spilled some on the front of my dress. They’ll kill me!”

Ms Daly said Diana later asked her: “Do you think if I just tuck the front in they’ll never notice?”

She replied: “Yes absolutely – you and every bride in the country has done that!”
