In the documentary, titled, The Madness of King Charles, the voiceover says: “For the last 500 years, the reigning British Monarch is crowned the title of supreme governor of the Church of England and Defender of the Faith, Henry VIII by the Pope in 1521 for his early support for Roman Catholicism.

“However, Charles views on religion go against a long-standing tradition in the Royal Family, after the Prince of Wales declared to be the defender of all faiths.

“He has praised Islam, Sikhism, Buddhism, the Greek Orthodox church and other un-Orthodox beliefs, going against the traditional stance taken since the reign of Henry VIII.”

Reverend Gordon Warren, former rector of Limehouse told the programme, made by British Royal Family Documentary: “If he can’t in all honesty be supreme governor of the Church of England, then perhaps abdication.”

The Prince has caused controversy within the Anglican church when he brought up his views several years ago, stating that he wanted to embrace all the other religions practised in Britain.

The move would mean Charles – the future monarch – would no longer be known as the Defender of the Faith.

But he has vowed to become Defender of Faith, which he hopes will instil unity among different cultures and religions across the UK.

However, the prince would need Parliament to amend the 1953 Royal Titles Act before he can change is officially allowed to change his stance.

A Clarence House spokesman previously said on the issue: “There has been work done on the accession planning as you would expect however there has been no planning of the Coronation or its contents.”

Vernon Bogdanor, Professor of Government at Oxford University, told the Telegraph: “In 1952, when the Queen came to the throne, it was very much an Anglican society. The Prince of Wales will become head of a nation which is multi-denominational.

“The Prince has said that he wants to be seen as a defender of all religious faiths and not just the Anglican church but the Coronation is an Anglican ceremony. Any change would require legislation.”

He said that it would be possible that members of other faiths, such as Muslims and Hindus would attend Charles’ Coronation as Westminster Abbey when he comes king.
