Homicide detectives are investigating after a man in his early 20s was fatally struck by a train at Bloor-Yonge subway station on Monday morning.

Toronto police have arrested a man in his 40s in connection with the incident. He has not been charged at this time.

Det. Rob North said the victim was on the platform around 10:15 a.m. and “about to get on a train” when some type of “interaction” occurred. He was then hit by an eastbound train on Line 2. It’s unclear if the victim was pushed or stumbled, he explained, noting they’re still in the early stages of the investigation.

“We believe this person was the victim of a homicide,” said North.

The man was taken to hospital where he later died.

Police and transit officers arrested the suspect at the scene shortly after what they say was an “isolated” incident. He has not yet been interviewed by investigators.

North is appealing for any witnesses to contact police.

TTC delays

TTC trains on Line 2 are bypassing Bloor-Yonge station while police investigate. This is expected to continue into the evening rush.

Shuttle buses are running between Castle Frank and St. George stations, said TTC spokesperson Brad Ross, but they are “limited.”

The transit agency has provided surveillance video to police and have also arranged for counselling services to its employees, Ross explained.

Line 1 had been closed between St. Clair and Union stations earlier Monday due to two separate personal injuries on the tracks.
