EA has released the reveal trailer for the upcoming Star Wars Squadrons game which is due to released on October 2 for PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
Squadrons will mark the first time in EA’s history of owning the rights to the Star Wars video game brand that they have published a vehicle-focused title set in the long-running sci-fi world as well as the first time in over 17 years since any such title has been released. Images featured on the Xbox website, which have subsequently been taken down, showed the tagline “Pilots Wanted,” seemingly hinting at returning to the Rogue Squadron series.
Prior to EA, LucasArts held the rights to publishing the games and co-developed the Rogue Squadron series with California-based video game developers Factor 5. The Rogue Squadron series featured three highly-acclaimed games and was set to make a fourth installment for the Xbox 360 and a next-gen trilogy collection, but amidst LucasArts’ concerns over the console market and Factor 5’s financial issues, these plans were all scrapped.
Star Wars: Squadrons will also mark the first Star Wars game to come from EA following last year’s Jedi: Fallen Order from developer Respawn Entertainment, which received high critical acclaim and sold more than eight million copies by January 2020, just two months after the game’s release. In addition to the trailer debuting on Monday, EA is holding an EA Play Live virtual event on June 18 that will feature a number of other world premieres and news regarding future titles.
