British officials are reported to have an evacuation plan in place, for the royal family in case Brexit takes a “disruptive and ugly turn”.

According to The Times UK, emergency plans to relocate the royal family during the Cold War have been revived should there be riots in London if Britain suffers a disruptive departure from the European Union after the 29 March deadline.

The evacuation plan was originally put together in 1962 following the Cuban Missile Crisis, Daily Mail reports.

It consists of two phases: Operation Candid, which would see members of the royal family dispersed to various country homes and protected by the Royal Duties Force had hostilities broken out with Russia, and Python System, which would see members of the royal family places in a floating bunker of the Royal yacht Britannia should things have escalated further.

Leading Brexiteer Jacob Rees-Mogg has however condemned the revived plan, telling the publication: “The over-excited officials who have dreamt up this nonsense are clearly more students of fantasy than of history.”
