One person was sent to hospital after their pickup truck crossed opposing lanes and struck a utility pole on the Malahat Saturday.
Shawnigan RCMP says the vehicle was traveling northbound when it inexplicably crossed into the southbound lane.
Emergency crews responded around 3 p.m. just south of the turnoff to Shawnigan Lake Road following reports of the accident.
The vehicle stopped just short of a large drop off. The hydro pole it struck remained standing.
“There are no other people involved, it’s just the single vehicle and single occupant,” said Const. Ian Wetzel-eden of the Shawnigan Lake RCMP. “It absolutely could have been a lot worse… we are fortunate he didn’t continue further through that pole.”
The extent of the driver’s injuries is unknown. The cause of the accident is still under investigation.
Traffic was slowed down following the accident, and only after a short closure all lanes were open by 3:30 p.m.
