UK Supermarket opening times will vary today – on account of it being New Year’s Day (Jan 1).
Tesco, Asda, Sainsbury’s, Morrisons, Aldi, Lidl, Waitrose (and many others) will alter their opening hours to give staff a much needed break.
While many supermarkets opted to close their doors on Boxing Day this year, most will remain open today for anyone needing to pick up last minute supplies.

Tesco Extra, Superstores and Metro branches will open as usual on New Year’s Eve but close early at 7pm, while Express stores will shut at 10pm.
On New Year’s Day (January 1), Tesco Superstores, Extra, and Metro shops will open from 9am until 6pm. Express stores will be open between 8am and 10pm.
On January 2, most shops will open at 6am and close at their usual time.
Asda hit the headline this year when they announced plans to remain closed on Boxing Day to give staff more time with loved ones this year.
However, stores will be open on both New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day this year.
It is expected that stores will be open from 7am until 7pm on New Year’s Eve, before closing and reopening between 10am and 5pm on New Year’s Day.
On New Year’s Eve most Sainsbury’s will be open from 7am until 7pm, while on New Year’s Day, from 9am until 7pm. Hours return to normal on January 2.
Morrisons stores will close early on New Year’s Eve at 6pm, and reopen on New Year’s Day from 9am until 6pm. Opening hours will return to 7am-10pm on January 2.
Aldi said most stores in the UK will be open on Thursday December 31 from 8am to 6pm. They will then close for New Year’s Day and reopen on Saturday January 2, from 8am to 10pm.
Lidl will close to shoppers on New Year’s Day.
Selected stores may vary – but the opening hours for most UK stores on Thursday December 31 are 8am to 7pm.
The majority of Waitrose supermarkets will open on New Year’s Eve, from 8am to 6pm.
On New Year’s Day shops will be closed, with the exception of a small number which will have varying opening hours between 7am and 10pm.
