Last week, Joe Russo said that Chris Evans wasn’t finished with the role of the MCU’s Captain America just yet. However, if Evans does eventually feel the need to hang up the star-spangled shield for good, he can rest easy knowing that there’s a willing replacement already waiting in the wings.
While appearing on The Ellen Show, WWE wrestler/actor John Cena offered up his Captain America-related services to the good people of Marvel Studios.
“If it’s out there, if the Captain America people are listening, and you’re out there watching right now, I’ll totally do it. I totally will,” he said. “I think I’d be a good Captain America. And I’ve already ruined everybody’s childhood, so it can’t get any worse.”
Right now, it would make more sense for Sam Wilson/Falcon (Anthony Mackie) to take up the mantle of Captain America, seeing as he did it in the comics. That being said, he crumbled into a pile of ash at the end of Avengers: Infinity War, so he’ll need to be restored before he can turn into a new hero. Or they could go with the Winter Soldier, who also donned the shield years back in the comics.
Cena next appears in the Bumblebee spinoff movie as Sector 7’s Agent Burns. The ’80s-set movie, directed by Laika founder Travis Knight, arrives in theaters Dec. 21.
Evans returns as Steve Rogers in the currently-untitled Avengers 4, which will be released on May 4, 2019.
