Despite her numerous previous nominations, veteran actress Glenn Close has yet to win an Oscar. If there is justice in this world, that could change this year. Close is among the leading nominees for Best Actress, thanks to her stunning work in The Wife.
For her big night, Close opted to wear a stunning caped dress—in glittering, Oscar-like gold. She finished off the look with vintage Cartier earrings from 1990, two Cartier rings, and pared-down make up.
Close’s odds are looking good tonight—especially considering she took home the Golden Globe for the same role—but she’s far from a shoo-in. She faces steep competition from the likes of Roma’s Yalitza Aparicio, The Favourite’s Olivia Colman, A Star Is Born’s Lady Gaga, and Can You Ever Forgive Me?’s Melissa McCarthy.
That said, Close doesn’t seemed overly preoccupied with the outcome; on the morning that the Oscar nominations were announced, she was hardly on the edge of her seat.
“You won’t believe it, I was asleep,” she told Today’s hosts later that day. “I don’t even believe it myself… I’m in Montana and I have all my siblings over for ribs and I thought I was getting a cold so I said I better turn my phone off… I was so out of it.”
Ever kind-hearted, Close then took the chance to thank her fans and peers. “I feel such good will from everyone who saw the film and from the industry itself,” she said. “I’m thrilled to be in this time in my life and this time in my career, to be invited into this incredibly special room. It feels amazing.”
It’ll probably feel just a tad more amazing to win, should the Academy give her the honor tonight.
