In a tribute to the late Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, the “Fearless Girl” statue outside the New York Stock Exchange donned a lace collar over the weekend.

The symbolic ‘Fearless Girl‘ statue – originally installed in front of Wall Street‘s bronze Charging Bull but since relocated to stand opposite the New York Stock Exchange –now sports a new addition of a lace collar in tribute to equality and female empowerment figurehead Ruth Bader Ginsburg.

Ensconced at the heart of America‘s financial services hub since International Women‘s Day 2017, the statue was designed by Kristen Visbal as a statement of equality – making it a perfect fit for paying respect to the late associate justice of the Supreme Court of the United States who passed away on Friday.

Ginsburg was famed for wearing the neck garment as a symbol of defiance, referring to the lace loop as her ”dissent collar”. Much more than a fashion statement, the political meaning behind the accessory was a clear and conscious decision to ‘unapologetically feminize‘ a rejection of majority opinion according to the New York Times.

Now, that quiet act of defiance has been immortalized with a photograph of the ‘Fearless Girl‘ statue wearing the collar featuring in a full-page ad in the New York Times, paid for by State Street Global Advisors (the same company that first commissioned the statue).

Numerous controversies have followed ‘Fearless Girl‘, including its relocation as well as its genesis as a high-risk brand campaign authored by McCann to promote the asset manager behind it.

Ginsburg served as a jurist continuously since being appointed to the role by former US president Bill Clinton. Her successor will be named by Trump before the end of the week.
