A passenger train travelled for 23 minutes with one of its doors open, accident investigators have said.

The service was travelling from London Liverpool Street towards Southend Victoria at around 7.20am on August 22.

A passenger noticed the open door at the opposite side of the platform and alerted the driver at Hockley station.

An investigation was launched by The Rail Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB), which found that the door was open for about 23 minutes when the train reaches speeds of up to 80 miles per hour.

The RAIB have said that they will be releasing a document soon which will highlight safety lessons that can be learnt from this incident.

In July, the RAIB conducted a similar investigation into a Transport for London Jubilee line train which travelled between two stations with 10 doorways open.

The investigation found that the tube driver’s lack of sleep and food may have played a part in why the doors were not shut.
