UK coronavirus deaths have now passed 80,000 with scientists calling for stricter lockdown measures to be introduced.

Figures released on Saturday saw over 1,000 new deaths which tipped the total over another grim milestone for the UK.

It came on the same day Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip received the Covid-19 vaccination, with the jab administered by a royal doctor at Windsor Castle.

England is now almost a week into a third national lockdown after Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced the country would enter another lockdown on Monday, January 4, due to a surge in coronavirus cases.

– Sixteen people have been arrested for breaching Covid-19 restrictions during an anti-lockdown protest in south-west London, the Metropolitan Police said.

A crowd of about 30 people marched down Clapham High Street on Saturday afternoon chanting “take your freedom back” while being heckled by members of the public.

The Met said 16 people were arrested for suspected breaches of coronavirus regulations and taken into custody. Officers also issued 22 fixed penalty notices following the event.
