Mouthwash has been found to reduce Covid-19’s viral load, studies have found.

Cardiff University found mouthwashes containing at least 0.07 per cent cetypyridinium chloride (CPC) showed “promising signs” of being able to combat the virus in a laboratory.

The preliminary result comes ahead of a clinical trial into whether using over-the-counter mouthwash has the potential to reduce the levels of Covid-19 in a patient’s saliva.

The report is yet to be peer reviewed but supports another study published last week that found CPC-based mouthwashes are effective in reducing Covid’s viral load.

– Boris Johnson could cut foreign aid spending to pay for Covid crisis, admits minister
One potential side effect of the coronavirus crisis could see the government temporarily cut the foreign aid budget to help repair the UK’s public finances.

Communities secretary Robert Jenrick did not deny reports discussions had been held between the prime minister and the chancellor about slashing the proportion of national income spent on aid from 0.7 per cent to 0.5 per cent – despite the commitment being enshrined in law.

– Coronavirus vaccine means ‘things will look dramatically different by spring’, says scientist

Positive results from two coronavirus vaccine trials mean that “things are going to look dramatically different by the spring”, according to a leading scientist.

Sir John Bell, regius professor of medicine at Oxford University, said it was “completely possible” that large swathes of the public could be vaccinated in the coming months, pointing to the distribution of tens of millions of flu jabs each winter as proof that a mass rollout is feasible.
