Black Friday sales 2020 UK: When do they start, Cyber Monday deals and more, Report

Black Friday, the shopping bonanza which began in the US but has become increasingly popular in the UK, is fast approaching.

But these days the sales last longer than 24 hours, with the whole month being dubbed as “Black November”.

This year, due to coronavirus restrictions, we are going to experience the shopping rush online.

Thousands of brands across the country are preparing for spikes in online traffic on November 27 and 30.

Some retailers are also introducing dedicated shopping hours for the vulnerable.

Big name brands and retailers such as Amazon, John Lewis, Curry’s, Very, Boots and more, slash prices in the lead up to Christmas.

However, fashion giant Next – which also owns the Lipsy brand – has confirmed it won’t be taking part in Black Friday his year after revealing losses of more than £16million due to lockdown, the Daily Mirror reports.

When is Black Friday 2020 and when do the sales start?

Taking its lead from the American calendar, Black Friday is always the day after Thanksgiving.

This year Black Friday falls on November 27 2020.

That is, officially, as unofficially lots of retailers jump the gun and list their deals ahead of the big day, with Amazon at the helm.

Consumer group Which? expects most sales will start the week before Black Friday, based on its pricing research.

Why is it called Black Friday?

The earliest evidence of the phrase Black Friday suggests that the term originated in Philadelphia, where it was used by police to describe the heavy and disruptive pedestrian and vehicular traffic that would occur on the day after Thanksgiving.

This usage dates to at least 1961.

More than twenty years later, as the phrase became more widespread, a popular explanation became that this day represented the point in the year when retailers begin to turn a profit, thus going from being “in the red” to being “in the black”.

When is Cyber Monday 2020?

In case you happen to miss out on any discounts, Black Friday is quickly followed by Cyber Monday, which is the first Monday after, and so is on November 30 this year.

Amazon will offer Cyber Monday deals from November 28th-30th bringing customers 72-hours of some of the top deals of the season.
