Avatar 2: James Cameron reveals sequel will be "an emotional rollercoaster"

It feels like just yesterday the original exploded on to our screens – it was 10 years ago mind you – and now the director is gearing us up for the 2020 sequel release.

The 64-year-old Titanic director – who will also be releasing Avatar 3, 4 and 5 in the future – has now revealed what we can look forward to in the sci-fi universe teasing ‘an emotional rollercoaster’.

In case you need a refresher- the last time we saw Jake Scully (Sam Worthington) he was about to start an entirely new life, leaving his earthly body and to join his new wife Neytiri – played by Zoe Saldana – to live with the other Pandora-dwellers in Neytiri.

While speaking with the Empire podcast, James Cameron provided some interesting details about the many Avatar sequels awaiting us in the next five years. For starters, Cameron shared that the couple are still together and now have an eight-year-old daughter as she shared a ‘critical’ argument scene between the bickering parents, shot from the point of view of their kid.
Sounds tense!

‘There’s a three-page argument scene between Jake and Neytiri, a marital dispute, very, very critical to the storyline,’ Cameron explains on the Avatar Podumentary.

He continued: ‘I wound up shooting it all from the point of view of the eight-year-old hiding under the structure and peeking in […] Having gone through the experience with [Sam Worthington] on Avatar, I now knew how to write the Jake character going forward across the emotional rollercoaster of the next four movies.

‘It’s been tough on him. He’s done two pictures back to back now because we did 2 and 3 together. He had to go to some dark places.’

Avatar 2, featuring Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Stephen Lang, Giovanni Ribisi, Sigourney Weaver, Kate Winslet, and more opens 18 December 2020.

And then we can look forward to Avatar 3 on 17 December 2021; Avatar 4 on 20 December 2024; and Avatar 5 on 19 December 2025.
