BERLIN – German authorities say two suspected members of the Basque separatist group ETA have been arrested in Berlin.
Police and prosecutors said the Spanish citizens, who were arrested Friday, had been using forged identity documents. Both men had been sought for years on European arrest warrants.
One 37-year-old suspect was sought by Spain for allegedly carrying out arson and other attacks on banks and railway lines in 2007. The other, aged 29, is accused by France of participating in a criminal group that aimed to carry out terrorist acts there in 2011-2012. Their names weren’t released.
In 43 years of its armed campaign for an independent Basque Country, ETA killed 829 people and injured thousands. The group has been inactive for more than five years.
