As they age men are generally concerned about their risk for prostate cancer increasing. One way to help prevent prostate cancer may be a good diet. Doctor’s Health Press reported, it is believed that the Western diet which is filled with processed, high-fat food may lead to an increased risk of developing prostate cancer.
Prostate cancer is one of the leading causes of cancer deaths which is seen among men. The American Cancer Society says about one in seven men in the United States gets prostate cancer. The risk of being diagnosed with prostate cancer increases considerably after 65 years old. This risk appears to be even higher when a Western diet with a great deal of processed food and high-fat food is consumed.
In this study by a team of researchers at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health the men who ate primarily a Western diet experienced a two-and-a-half-times increased risk of dying from prostate cancer and a 67 percent greater risk of overall death. There was a 36 percent lower risk of dying among the men who made healthier dietary choices. Clearly dietary choices appeared to have a significant impact on prostate cancer risk.
It was concluded by the researchers that a diet which is made up of less processed foods and which includes more vegetables, fruits and fish is beneficial for prostate health. As it has been suggested by this study dietary and lifestyle choices are at the center of the cause for about 75 percent of advanced prostate cancer cases. An awareness of this should help men better prevent prostate cancer.
WebMD reports two diets which are known to be associated with longevity and decreased risks for prostate cancer are the traditional Japanese diet and a Southern Mediterranean diet. A Japanese diet is high in soy, green tea, vegetables, and fish and is low in calories and fat. The Mediterranean diet includes a lot of fresh fruits and vegetables, tomatoes, red wine, olive oil, garlic, and fish. Both of these diets are low in red meat. Therefore it’s clearly a good idea to eat healthy foods to help prevent prostate cancer.
