Zara, 37, and husband Mike tragically lost a baby in the days before Christmas 2016 at about four months into her pregnancy.

And yesterday the equestrian champion revealed she suffered a second miscarriage “really early on”.

Zara, who is mother to Mia, four and baby Lena with rugby star Mike, said: “I…had another miscarriage really early on.

“You need to go through a period where you don’t talk about it because it’s too raw, but, as with everything, time’s a great healer.”

Speaking about her first miscarriage, she added: “I had a miscarriage in 2016 and afterwards loads of people wrote to me and Mike to say they’d been through the same thing.

“In our case, it was something really rare; it was nature saying, ‘this one’s not right.’

“For me, the worst thing was that we had to tell everyone – everyone we knew.”

Zara said she drew on her family for support, adding: “It was a time when my family came to the fore and I needed them.

“I had to go through having the baby because it was so far along.”

Speaking candidly about her loss, Zara said it was even harder to bear because the pregnancy had been announced to the public – a rule which applies to descendants of the Queen.

She said: “We had to tell everyone … that’s the hardest bit. That’s why I think a lot of people don’t talk about it.

“It happens, it really happens a lot. It is hard and you are very lucky when you have a good pregnancy and everything works.”

Zara said that she and husband Mike were able to mourn in private when they lost their second pregnancy.

She also paid a moving tribute to her former England rugby player husband, praising him as “very supportive”.

“It’s hard for the guys, it s a different feeling of loss,” she added.

The family are busy with Mia preparing to start school later this year.

On dealing with her new baby, Zara added: “It is going back and doing it all again.”

The couple first met in Australia during Mike’s 2003 rugby World Cup triumph with England.

Last year Mike, 39, movingly opened up in a candid interview about the trauma of losing a child.

He said: “One thing you do learn is how many other people have had to go through the same.

“The saving grace for us has been Mia … However down we feel, she will come running up in our faces.”

Zara, a former world eventing champion, is daughter of the Queen’s only daughter Anne and is one of the royal family’s most popular and modern members.

She won an equestrian silver at the 2012 London Olympics and is understood to have recently got back into the saddle for riding training.
