Young Greatness dead in New Orleans shooting

Rapper Young Greatness, whose given name was Theodore Jones, was killed in a shooting early Monday morning (Oct. 29) on Elysian Fields Avenue. The Orleans Parish Coroner’s Office identified Jones on Monday.

TV station WDSU first reported early Monday that Jones was the man killed in the shooting. Jones’ mother, Jeanine Rose, told WDSU her son was fatally shot in a Waffle House parking lot early Monday. He was in New Orleans for a funeral and was Facetiming with his manager when the shooting started, Rose told WDSU.

Young Greatness is known for his 2015 song, “Moolah,” which made it to the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The music video was set in New Orleans. Jones is a New Orleans native, who moved to Houston after Hurricane Katrina, according to media reports.

The shooting was reported to police at 1:35 a.m. in the 2900 block of Elysian Fields Avenue (map), police said. Authorities have not released the name of the 34-year-old man who died at the scene.

According to preliminary information from the New Orleans Police Department, the man was fatally shot in the back. NOPD said they believe two people, who have not been identified yet, were involved in the shooting. The two suspects also took the man’s vehicle. Authorities did not release a description of the suspects or the vehicle that was stolen.

After the shooting, the Waffle House parking lot location was taped off, as well as a portion of the 2100 block of Abundance Street, which borders the lot. Evidence cones were scattered across the parking lot, and crime scene investigators could be seen measuring distances outside the restaurant.

There appears to be three security cameras near the Waffle House, with one facing the edge of the parking lot, closer to Agriculture Street, and two on the Elysian Fields-facing storefront. It was not immediately clear if the cameras captured the shooting or if NOPD had obtained the video, and the Waffle House manager on Monday mid-morning deferred questions to a corporate media office.
